Updates

We live in a rapidly changing world.

  • The world population is increasing.
  • Birth rates are falling.
  • In some places, death rates are rising because of outbreaks of diseases.
  • Global climate is changing, with an ever-increasing body of evidence supporting the claim that human activities are the principal cause of this change.
  • Some countries are disappearing, and others are being formed.
  • New wars are beginning, and other wars are ending.
  • Democratic institutions are spreading around the world.
  • New sources of natural resources are being exploited, while other sources are near depletion.
  • China, and to a lesser degree, India, are playing more important roles in the global economy, producing more, and consuming more.
  • Our sense of identity—who we think we are—is changing, with religion playing a more and more important role in many parts of the world.

Like all textbooks, The World Today needs to be updated when there are important changes in the world. The purpose of this section is to provide teachers and students with some critical updates to the textbook content. For example, information about world population will be updated once each year (in the late summer) as new data become available. Other updates will be posted as they arise.
